Welcome to the Burnside Working Men’s Club, Football Club

This Club plays in the Durham and District League.

The members train every Sunday morning 10.00 a.m hail rain or snow at there own

Ground next to the Burnside Working Men’s Club, ample parking available.

Gary Ellison is the clubs manager (a hard task master who gets results)

Over the past four seasons Gary’s team had to start in the fourth division, with hard work and motivation they became champions of division four.

Promoted to division three same result champions, promotion to division two again champions, (can you see a pattern?) last season division one again you guessed it CHAMPIONS

Next season they are promoted into the Premier league, a big step for a small club in Fence houses, what an achievement by these un-sung hero’s of our village.

http://www.connorsolutions.co.uk/

A NORTH east electronics firm is reaping the rewards of planning for and investing in its future after securing a major new contract with one of the world’s leading audio/visual equipment designers.

Connor Solutions will now provide electronics assembly services for manufacturing some of Arcam’s high-end industry-leading products, under an agreement which has an annual value of around £3m.

And having also just obtained accreditation from a high-level aerospace industry quality management programme, Connor will now be looking for further expansion into potentially-lucrative new defence markets.

Based in Houghton-le-Spring, Connor Solutions was set up ten years ago and now employs around 160 people.

It specialises in providing low to medium volume Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) to companies operating across a wide range of markets in the UK and Ireland, from industrial and audio/visual to telecoms/datacoms, medical and environmental.

Connor Solutions’ continuing development has been supported with a number of rounds of equity investment from regional fund management firm NEL Fund Managers.

NEL first became involved with the company in 2003, with further investments following in 2004 and then in January this year as a large part of a wider investment package, and it has maintained a presence on Connor’s board of non-executive directors throughout the relationship.

Phil Hall, finance director at Connor Solutions, said: “The business has evolved and grown successfully over the years, but last year, we could see the difficulties that the coming recession would cause all parts of the commercial world, including our customer base, so took the time to review our operations and plan how we would take the business forward. With the recovery now on the way after the recent economic stablisation, we can see a number of new opportunities opening up, such as the new Arcam contract, and we are in great shape to take advantage of them.

“We’ve long recognised that our expertise would be well received in the defence and aerospace markets, and having now got the quality accreditation that the sectors’ leading companies demand that their suppliers have, we believe we will be able to swiftly develop new income streams based on the industry relationships we’re already building.”

Yvonne Gale, portfolio manager at NEL Fund Managers, adds: “Connor Solutions’ success is based on a clear commitment to quality, both in terms of the components they provide and the service they offer, and the management team is well set to grow the business even further.”

Some old footage from fence houses.

Fence Houses is a small village within the parish of Houghton-le-Spring in County Durham.

It came into existence when Napoleonic prisoners were housed on the outskirts of Houghton-le-Spring. The prisoners were used as labour to cut a path through the hill at Houghton-le-Spring in order to get the troops from Durham to the coast at Sunderland. Houghton Cut as it became known has now been expanded to carry a 4-lane road, the A690. The place the prisoners were housed was known as “The French Houses” and this later changed to “Fencehouses”.

This origin is highly debatable. A more likely origin was put forward by the late Houghton-le-Spring historian, C.A. Smith MA, in an article in the Official Houghton-le-Spring Urban District Handbook, 1962, as:

Fence Houses derives its name from Biddick Fence which formed the southern boundary of South Biddick and included Burnmoor.

The land was originally part of the Grange (a large local manor house). In about 1950, a modern housing estate was added to the village it, called the Grange estate.

A railway line was built, bringing a 2-platform station providing services to Sunderland, Newcastle upon Tyne and Durham, and a stock yard from which local farmers shipped their cattle by train. The station opened in 1836, and the Post Office two years later as a Railway Sorting Office. The line closed to passengers in May 1964,apart from a one day service for the Durham Miners Gala that year. in the 1960s. Fencehouses had the largest telephone exchange in the area (The Police house at Shiney Row some 4 miles away had the number “Fencehouses 55″ in the 1940s). In the 1980s the Fencehouses exchange numbers became the Durham exchange numbers.

Fencehouses was the terminus of a tram service from Sunderland.

The village is essentially a single main street cut in two by the path of the old railway line which also splits the village into control of two local authorities – Sunderland Council for the south of the village and Durham to the north). Just near to the railway line and yards from the old station, is a new development of townhouses and apartments called “the sidings”.

Recently, schooling facilities in Fencehouses have undergone a massive facelift. The previous three schools in the area (Dubmire Junior School, Dubmire Infant School and Dubmire Nursery) have been amalgemated under the one roof, in a multi-million pound development.

and the signal box as well as wrecking the gates. It was a miracle

that no one was hurt and the repairs to the wall of the signal cabin

(NCB side) and back station shelter could be seen right up to their

demolition. Its also a grained but interesting via of Lambton Road.

If you look carefully you can also see some of the wagons lying in the road.
