Councillors recommended to back plans to extend Fence Houses fuel depot

12:50pm Monday 22nd April 2013 in News By Mark Summers

COUNCILLORS will this week be recommended to back controversial plans to extend a diesel and kerosene depot.

Durham County Council has received more than 130 objections and a 50-name petition to the application on Thursday to increase vehicle storage at PAR Petroleum’s site at Lumley Sixth Pit Industrial Estate, Fence Houses, near Chester-le-Street.

Residents are worried about safety and the loss of Green Belt.

But the council’s North Area Planning Committee will be recommended by planning officers to approve the scheme but refer it to the Government for ratification because it departs from the authority’s own framework for development.

The firm wants to extend the hardstanding area for its tankers onto nearby land classified as Green Belt and install floodlighting.

The company, which is 100 years old, and has 27 employees, says it needs more space because it has a major contract supplying airports.

In its submission to the council it said it would take on seven extra workers but if permission was refused it would have to consider relocating to larger premises outside the area.

Councillors will be told that the fire brigade has no objections over safety.

But the council’s own spatial policy officers do not support the application because of the impact on the Green Belt.

Planning officer Steve France says in a report that residents are against the loss of land that is used by dog walkers and are concerned about proposed tree planting to screen the site. “Safety issues are of equally prime concern to the residents who have responded.

“There are varying degrees of acceptance of PAR’s existing presence and operation.

“Many correspondents refer to the Buncefield fire of 2005, and the Health and Safety regimes and procedures that have followed the findings of the inquiries into that event.”

Mr France says the employment and economic issues are important.

“Given the present economic climate, and the messages from the council’s corporate core, officers recommend that these specific proposals are on balance an acceptable departure from the Green Belt policies – noting that this issue would have to be ratified by the Secretary of State in the event of any intention to approve.”

The planning committee meets at Chester-le-Street Civic Centre on Thursday at 2pm.

Published on Wednesday 14 September 2011 12:43

A GREEN-FINGERED wagon driver has reclaimed his champion spot at a leek show, setting a village record.

Jack McKitten, of Fence Houses, took the first place ribbon at the Burnside Workingmen’s Club Leek Show.

This is the third time in four years that the 42-year-old has claimed the first prize, after growing two leeks measuring 300.33 cubic inches, the equivalent to almost five litres, and the biggest ever grown by anyone in the village.

He said: “I’m over the moon to have won. I’m chuffed to bits. Growing leeks like this takes a lot of hard work.

“You get 10 months of growing time leading up to the competition and you have to tend to them every day, so it’s a lot of hard work.

“I won the first two years I took part then came second last year, so it’s great to reclaim my title. I’ll definitely be coming back next year to defend it. I’m the one to beat now.”

Trevor Chapman, steward of the Fence Houses club which hosts the show every year, said: “The leeks are the size of tree trunks, it’s no wonder it’s a village record.

“Jack is in our show so we’re really happy that he’s won and set the record. We’re Very pleased
I,ll start with what a lovely fella, Alf was. He cut my hair, my fathers hair and my grandfathers hair. (same style) the man was a legend in Fence Houses. He is affectionally talked about, in all of the pubs and clubs constantly. I am sure all the lads who have shuffled off this mortal coil are over the moon Alf is back to cut their hair, more talking going on than cutting. I hope there is a betting shop next door. God bless Alf and don,t work too hard.
