A SOUTH Tyneside couple are celebrating the diamond wedding they thought they would never see.

Eddy and Ena Hannen, of Edgeworth Close, Boldon, tied the knot six decades ago today, but five years ago they were almost separated forever.

Mr Hannen, 82, a retired clerk collector, was diagnosed with cancer and told by doctors he would need an operation to remove his kidney and part of his bladder.

Going under the knife meant that he could live to celebrate 60 years of marriage to his wife.

Mrs Hannen, 80, a retired ministry worker, said: “We’re so thankful to Mr Armitage and his secretary at South Tyneside District Hospital for what they’ve done for us.

“This time five years ago, we never would have thought we’d be celebrating our diamond wedding. Mr Armitage gave Eddy an ultimatum. He said if he didn’t have the operation, he didn’t know how long he would last. We feel so lucky to still be together.”

The couple, who have a daughter, Carole, 55, first met at the Fence Houses YMCA in Sunderland, when they were just 16 and 18 years old.

Mr Hannen was drafted into the RAF shortly afterwards, but they stayed together through his two-years of service. He proposed on his return, and they moved in together.

Mrs Hannen said: “The opportunity came up and we just grabbed it, then we went straight into town to buy rings and see a vicar, and set up our wedding for 10 weeks’ time.

“My mam thought we were nuts when we got back home and told her, she thought we’d never be able to get everything together in time, but we did. We had a big white wedding with more than 200 guests.”

On the secret to a long and happy marriage, Mrs Hannen said: “We’ve just always done everything together and it’s kept us strong.

“We’re best friends as well as a married couple and it’s really important. Our daughter Carole is disabled, so we’ve spent a lot of time together looking after her. We’re just so happy to have seen this day.”

She’s not exactly a coal miner’s daughter, but Kate Middleton has deep family roots in the grim coal pits of northern England.

Middleton has already captivated the world’s imagination with her Cinderella story of going from middle-class girl-next-door to queen-in-waiting, but until recently few knew of her family’s connection to coal mining, once a prime source of Britain’s prosperity that has now fallen on hard times.

Her great-grandfather left coal country nearly a century ago in pursuit of a safer way of life in the London area, but his siblings stayed behind and spent their working lives in the coal pits. She still has relatives in the area who expect her to bring a practical, no-nonsense approach to royal life once she and Prince William tie the knot at Westminster Abbey on April 29.

John Harrison, a cousin who still lives in Hetton-Le-Hole — once a bustling mining center now down on its luck — doesn’t expect Middleton to act all high and mighty when she officially becomes a princess.

Kate’s wedding dress details to be revealed on official website

Harrison believes she still has a bit of the coal country in her, a head-screwed-on-straight practicality more common to the grit of northeast England than the gilded parlors of Buckingham Palace, with its priceless art collection and stifling protocol.

“I think she’s going to stamp her northeast way of life on William,” said Harrison, who has lost touch with Middleton’s side of the family but still plans to celebrate the royal wedding with his family’s own party-of-the-year. “She’s told him they’re going to be more normal, more down to earth.”

The fact that the offspring of a coal mining family will soon be a princess — and a likely future queen — is taken by some as proof that Britain’s once-rigid social system has become more malleable.

Will and Kate invite exes to their wedding

“They certainly wouldn’t have done that in the hundred years before that. They went from the bottom to the top.”
The upward mobility — tabloids are calling it “From Pit to Palace” — began when Middleton’s great-grandfather Thomas Harrison, fed up with the grim prospects of life in a coal town, packed up and took his family to the London area, not with any grand plans, but simply to get cleaner, safer work.

Harrison, using his carpentry skills to avoid the coal pits, left behind most of his brothers and sisters, including his brother George, who became John Harrison’s father. Thomas Harrison moved first to Ealing, a suburb west of London, and his granddaughter Carole eventually married Michael Middleton, who came from a successful family of lawyers and businessmen.

No royal wedding invite? Get a job at the palace

That was a distinct step up in the world. Their daughter Kate Middleton went to the best schools, and met a prince. They had an eight-year, on-again-off-again courtship that — finally — led to an engagement in November.

It was not unusual for men to leave the coal regions if they could, said Kate Reeder, a curator at the Beamish Museum that documents the region’s history. She said coal mines in the Hetton area reached their peak in 1913 — when miners were relatively well paid — but then went into a sharp decline that prompted some men to abandon the mines in search of better jobs.

Raise a glass of Will and Kate commemorative beer!

“It was a really, really unhealthy activity,” she said. “Just being underground for most of your life is not a healthy thing to do, plus there’s the dust and the noise and the repetition of their work, and a lot of dangers from the machinery, and from explosions and gas incidents. So it’s not unusual for people to leave.”

Many who left did well for themselves, but the Harrison story is unprecedented.

“I suppose it’s a bit like winning the lottery,” said John Harrison. “You’re not going to get any money out of it, but at least you’ll have memories. We’ll still be working class, but it’s a nice feeling to know there’s something there in the family, that we’re going to be related to royalty.”

http://www.lambtoncastle.co.uk

AN aristocrat has announced plans to transform part of his North East estate into a wedding and entertainment venue.

Renovation work is being carried out by Lord Durham on the grade II-listed Lambton Castle, near Bournmoor, County Durham, to turn it into a venue for upmarket civil weddings, classical concerts and parties.

Biddick Hall, an impressive grade I-listed country house that was home to the Lord’s mother, Lady Lambton, until her death in February 2003, will also stage small weddings, celebrations, weekend breaks, a monthly supper club and it will also host the bridal party for weddings in the nearby castle.

The estate is also home to a small chapel which will be available for religious wedding ceremonies. Estate chiefs have been in touch with the Bishop of Durham to have it re-consecrated.

They are also looking into licensing a walled garden and a pavilion for a variety of entertainment as well as a large field by the river where they hope to hold proms in the park-style events and large concerts.

Edward Lambton, the 7th Earl of Durham, hopes transformation of the 1,400-acre private estate will generate income which will go towards the vast upkeep of the historic properties and land.

Estates manager Bob Duff said: “The estate has always been owned by different generations of the same family. The area of Washington used to belong to them before it was compulsory purchased from the family to build the new town.

“The Lord of Durham’s mother lived in Biddick Hall until her death a few years go. After that the home was just used by the family periodically.

“Lord Durham got in touch with me about a year ago about the progression of the estate. Estates such as this get more expensive to run and difficult to keep. The family has an estate in Northumberland and a home in Italy.

“The plans were his idea and he employed me to oversee the development.”

Lambton Estate has already set up a number of events. These include a music night on April 15 featuring tenor George Bartle, soprano Susan Parkes and pianist Warren Mailley-Smith and Universal Horror on April 16, a film night hosted by Oscar-winning film maker Kevin Brownlow. On May 8 Lord Durham will open the estate to the public when they stage the Lambton Run, a 5k and 10k race, in aid of Willow Burn Hospice in Lanchester, County Durham and The Rainbow Trust.

North East chef Anthony Brown is also holding monthly supper clubs and cookery classes.

Lord Durham inherited the Lambton estate after the death of his father, a one-time Tory MP for Berwick, in 2006.

The current Lord married for the third time earlier this year, wedding 29-year-old model Marina Hanbury at a register office in London.

Lions Lived in grounds of castle

LAMBTON Castle, the family’s ancestral seat, is steeped in history

In 1800 the first Lord of Durham commissioned the building of the structure which was built around the existing Harraton Hall, an 18th Century mansion.

The Lord – also known as “Radical Jack” and a son-in-law of Earl Grey – wanted the property to be in the style of a Norman Castle.

The family lived in the property but there was a problem with subsidence, ironically caused by the mineworking in the area on which the family fortune was built. It was rebuilt in the 1860.

In 1930 the family moved out of the property following further issues with subsidence and it fell into disrepair.

In 1972, Lambton Lion Park opened on the estate. It closed in the early 1980s due to lack of funds and problems with escaping animals.

Mr Duff said: “The county council took it over as a teacher training centre for a while then in the seventies the estate was ran as a safari park.

“There are wonderful stories about baboons on the A1 and hippopotamus in Chester-le-Street.

“People still talk about the safari park now with the giraffe house and the bear pit.

“A lot of people came to the estate back then and they still think of it like that today.”

First New Year baby in Sunderland was Georgia Ann Henry, pictured here with parents Allan Henry and Hannah Wood. SURPRISE arrivals gave parents double cause for New Year celebrations as their newborns were delivered on Wearside. The first 24 hours of 2011 were busy for Sunderland Royal Hospital’s maternity unit, with nine births on the ward. The first to make an appearance on New Year’s Day was Georgia Ann Henry, who was born at 10.35am, to mum Hannah Wood, 18, and Allan Henry, 20, of Fence Houses. Hannah’s due date had been Thursday, but Hannah went into labour at 5.30am, and Allan’s stepdad Jeff Wilkinson drove the couple to the hospital. Allan, who works for Tacle car seating company, which supplies Nissan, said: “It was a bit of a shock. “It all happened quite quickly and we thought she was going to have her in the back of the car. “It’s definitely a good way to start off the New Year. “It’s like a late Christmas present.” Jeff added: “Hannah was in pain and I could tell from the noises in the back the contractions were getting closer and closer and as much as I didn’t want to break the speed limit, I was like a bat out of hell.” Georgia, the couple’s first child, takes her middle name from Allan’s grandmother, who is suffering from cancer and plans to make the trip from her home in Liverpool to see the new arrival as soon as she can. Among the first visitors to see the 6lb 5oz baby was Hannah’s soldier brother David, 27, who feared he would miss the birth because he was due to return to his army base in the south of the country after his festive leave. The second arrival on the ward was Sophie Bell, who was born at 12.06pm to parents Stacey Tough and Jonny Bell, both 22 and from High Barnes. She weighed in at 8lb 4.5oz. She joins the couple’s daughter Chloe, who will mark her third birthday in a fortnight – just a day after her mother’s due date for Sophie. The family had been planning to spend their New Year away from Wearside to relax ahead of the birth, but Jonny decided against the trip to the cottage in Staindrop at the last minute in case their baby did decide to make an early appearance. Stacey said: “I wasn’t happy when he cancelled it, but I’m glad he did. “Because we were stopping, I said to him he may as well go out an do some taxiing to make some money and he dropped off one of his friends and then I had to call him to ask him to come back at about 6pm. “Chloe absolutely loves her, she can’t wait to take her home. “Everyone was joking beforehand, saying the baby would here in time for the New Year and the midwives were saying she might be a New Year baby and would she be the first, but I was the second. “All the family are over the moon and they’ve been celebrating.” The last of the nine births – who have the birth date of 1/1/11, was Alfie Liam Glaisder at 9.45pm, with the tot weighing 6lb 8.5oz. He is also the first child for Kimberley Carroll and Liam Glaisder, both 20, and from Dawdon. Kimberley, who was due to give birth on New Year’s Eve, said: “I had to be induced because my waters had gone, so they didn’t want to leave him in. “I came in at 8.30am and her came not long after 9.30pm. “He’s gorgeous and this makes it even more special.” South Tyneside’s first new arrival of 2011 was Oliver Jacob Ellison, who checked in at 2.15am on Saturday and weighed 7lb 8oz. He is a little brother for three-year-old Rhys. Mum Lori Crozier, 24, from Boldon, said: “When Rhys saw Oliver, his first words were ‘I love him’. “He always knew he was having a little brother and has been really excited to meet him. “I spoke to him in the morning before he came to see us, and he said ‘Mammy, I’m coming to meet my little brother’. “I’m happy Oliver was born on Saturday. It’s a nice date of birth – 1/1/11. “I was due on December 30, so I always knew there was a chance of him coming on New Year’s Day. “He’s been no bother at all.” As most people were phoning friends and family to wish them a happy new year, proud dad Craig Ellison, 28, was calling around to let everyone know the wonderful news of the new arrival. And 2011 will not only mark the year Oliver was born, but will be an extra-special one for the family as Miss Crozier and fiancé Mr Ellison are due to tie the knot. Miss Crozier added: “Craig and I have been together for five-and-a-half years, and engaged from about a year in, but we knew we wanted to have our family before we got married. “I think it’s lovely both our boys will be at our wedding.”

Here’s a round-up of what you can see, and where.

PANTO legends Ray Spencer and Bob Stott are leading the Christmas capers at the Customs House.
The South Shields venue reckons this year’s show, Puss In Boots, is its best yet.
It is the hilarious duo’s 35th year working together – and they still show no signs of retiring.
Bob said: “It certainly doesn’t feel like we’ve been doing this for 35 years.
“I don’t really count the years – I do it because I love it. I love getting on stage and entertaining all our friends, old and new.”
Returning to perform alongside Ray and Bob are Graham Overton (King Boris) and Peter Darrant (Osborne The Ogre).
Lucy Rafton and Afnan Iftikhar also make welcome returns to play Princess Cheryl and Much The Miller’s Son.
* Puss In Boots runs until January 8. Tickets start from £7. Call the box office on 454 1234.

JACK And The Beanstalk will be the only pantomime staged in Sunderland city centre this year.
It will be performed at the Royalty Theatre, the city’s oldest community theatre.
The show has been written by Royalty Youth Theatre member Jonny Chambers.
Director Gary Ian Ward said: “The pantomime is always our biggest show of the year and we are hoping this year’s will be even more popular because there will be no panto at the Empire.
“There will be community pantomimes, but as there are only two theatres in the city, we will be the only full-scale theatre panto.”
* Jack And The Beanstalk will run until December 18. For ticket details, tel 567 2669 or 553 2000.

GLASS slippers, laughs and romance are on the cards at Durham’s Gala Theatre.
The Durham City venue is hosting Cinderella until January 8, with a host of familiar faces and a real horse-drawn carriage.
Fence Houses actor Donald McBride will return for his third consecutive Gala panto outing, and this year appears as Sarah, one of the ugly sisters, alongside Spennymoor’s John Carter as Clara.
Joining Donald and John once again will be Seaham-born actor Neil Armstrong, who has been in pantomime every year since 1987.
Neil will play Cinderella’s step uncle, the evil Baron Gristle.
Completing the line-up of old friends will be Paul Hartley and Jane Deane as the comedy double act Buttons and Dishes.
Joining these Gala stalwarts will be some new faces.
Helen Embleton, pictured right, plays Fairy Marigold, having appeared last year as Narcissus in Sleeping Beauty at the Customs House, South Shields.
Australian Tom Caley plays the dashing Prince Charming with Sophie Michaels as his Cinderella.
* Tickets are available from 332 4041.

AFTER leaving the cobbled streets of Weatherfield behind, Corrie star Tupele Dorgu has arrived in Newcastle to play an alluring sorceress.
The actress, who played Kelly Crabtree in the soap, joins award-winning comedy duo Danny Adams and Clive Webb – playing Robin Hood and Friar Tuck – for Robin Hood at the Theatre Royal.
Tupele, 33, rose to fame playing the role of brash and bolshie seamstress Kelly in the hit ITV soap, and has also had roles in Loose Women, Casualty and Merseybeat.
She left Coronation Street in March, after six years, in order to return to her first love – the stage. She has performed in many musicals including the West End production of Mamma Mia!
Tupele, Clive and Danny are joined by panto villain extraordinaire Steve Arnott as the Sheriff and another ex-Coronation Street star, Phil Corbitt, as the henchman.
* Robin Hood: The Pantomime Adventure is at the Theatre Royal until January 11. Tickets are £10 to £27 and can be bought from the box office on 08448 11 21 21.

DESPITE cancelling its panto Sleeping Beauty, the Sunderland Empire promises a festive treat with White Christmas.
Based on the 1954 film of the same name, the musical makes its North East debut at the High Street West venue.
It stars Tom Chambers, who was the winner of 2008′s Strictly Come Dancing, after wowing the audience and judges with his dancing and charisma.
He starred in Holby City as Sam Strachan and as Max Tyler in Waterloo Road, and for the Empire show takes on the role of Bob Wallace.
Adam Cooper, principal at the Royal Ballet, who has danced in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, Billy Elliot The Movie, On Your Toes and Guys and Dolls in London’s West End,) will star as Phil Davis, the other half of the song and dance duo.
Brimming with classic Irving Berlin hits like Blue Skies, How Deep is the Ocean, Happy Holiday, Sisters and White Christmas, it tells the story of two buddies putting on a show in a Vermont Inn, and finding their perfect mates in the process.
* White Christmas is at the Empire until New Year’s Day. Tickets cost £15 to £39.50 from the 24-hour box office on 0844 847 2499.
