The man sitting inside if the wheel is Ray Cavaghan, later to become B foreman to the A foreman Gilbert Pickles.
The same man is sitting in the wheel in the other photo, with to the right of the photo is Mickey Garrigan (holding a newspaper) he became a B Foreman as well.
The photo with the 6 men in front of a car, to the right of the photo is Reggie Weeks, he lived along Avenue Vivian near the YMCA end, a path cut through the houses to the coke works, he lived near there.
In the picture with the car, second from the left is Harry Raine he worked on the by-product scrubbers, third from the left is Charlie Craggs,he was an attendant on the exhauster. The car probably belonged to Harry Raine.
Hi John, your right ,that is Harry Raine, he lived near us in the Burnside Estate. Nice to have met you today. Any chance you can put some old photos o here.
These photos were taken by my dad, Jack Black, who is in ONE picture (no that’s not him, ‘striking a pose’) leaning on the wheel, behind the newspaper held by Michael Garrigan.
He also took the pictures on this site of Gregory Terrace, Dubmire School, the colour Houghton Feast shot and the picture of me and my sister in the waiting shelter on Fence Houses Station. He would be well pleased to know that his pictures were being seen around the world, and enjoyed by people who remember the old village.
Yes John! I know he would be well impressed. I have just looked at the statistics. In the last 48hours we have had over 500 individual hits from South America, Australia,
South Africa, India, China, USA, Sweden, Germany, France and several little countries I have never even heard of, I will get round to putting a detailed list on the site, as it looks very impressive. Oh! And by the way thanks Jack, for taking the photo’s, you may be gone but certainly not forgotten.

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe the guy holding the kettle may have been an electrician called Ronnie Anderson.
Yes it certainly is. Ronnie is my father and he was delighted to see himself on the website.
