On the subject of names from the past: Anyone remember these
My Grandfather ex PC J R Hicks, who retired to F/H. and Grandmother
N Hicks (who was very active in the WI).
or the managers of the YMCA Shilladay and Renolds.
or the manager of the Lambton Baths, Tommy Murtagh.
or the headmaster of FHSMS Leonard Gelson.
or teachers at FHSMS Musgrave (Science), Pounder (PT/BDSM), Clark (Art), Norwood (Biology) and of course “Polly” Brignell (????)
or the Postmaster Richardson.
Hi Bob,
There’s a few good names to remember. I don’t recall them all but I do remember Tommy Murtagh.
Sadly the baths are all gone now and a scrap yard is in it’s place (listen to the fence houses song, type song in the search engine top right of home page)
I completed my life saving bronze award from Lambton baths and he was the instructor making sure I did everything correctly.
I was taught by Mr Musgrave, Mr Norwood who I thought were two of the best teachers in Fence houses School. I also had a few run ins with Mr Clarke who if I remember taught art and technical drawing, I m sure they call it something else now.
I certainly heard of Polly Brignall. I think she left before I arrived at the School, I believe she left with a nervous breakdown. I think that says it all. I met my wife of 33years at Fence Houses School and she remembers Miss Brignall as the smartest woman she ever new, wearing twin set and pearls pencil skirt. She does remember her having a really expensive sheep skin coat, when she wore the coat it smothered her small frame
It’s nice to think after umpteen years you never forget good teachers you always remember the bad ones as well.
I have seen a couple of photos of Mr Norwood on this site.
I still see Jimmy Richardson from time to time I remember his Dad he used to be a Rep of some kind for an Agricultural company, while he did work in the Post Office from time to time, I remember him as being a very nice man and an accomplished musician playing the piano and the Accordion. I think it was his wife who was the Postmistress. Jimmy followed in the family tradition becoming a Postmaster and inheriting his father’s Musical talent.
It would be nice to see some photos of the above mentioned people anyone got any you can upload them just click on the browse find the photo on your computer and hey presto
