| Born in Middlesbrough, I was educated at Newtown Infants, Stockton-on-Tees, Sedgefield Junior Mixed and Infants, Co. Durham and Ferryhill Grammar Technical School, Co. Durham. I completed my first degree at the University of Hull and followed that with a Postgraduate Diploma at Liverpool University. I was elected to represent Shiney Row in 2002 and, in 2004, Houghton Ward. I came late to formal politics but I’ve been involved in political activity all my adult life. Long before I joined the Labour Party I was active in the women’s movement in my trade union, as a shop steward, and as a campaigner on local environmental issues.
